A Day in the Life Aboard the Palace on Wheels

Dawn

The day begins with a knock and a tray: bed tea delivered to your cabin by your Khidmatgar, the liveried attendant who looks after your carriage around the clock. Outside the window, a new Rajasthani city is already sliding into view.

Morning

After breakfast in the Maharaja or Maharani dining car, you step onto a red carpet and into the day's excursion — a fort, a palace, a safari — accompanied by a multilingual guide who brings each site's history and legend to life. Transfers, entries and touring are all arranged for you.

Afternoon and evening

Lunch might be at a heritage hotel or back on board. Afternoons bring a second sight or free time to shop the bazaars. As the train rolls on to the next city, the Swarn Mahal bar and lounge car fill with conversation, and the spa car offers an Ayurvedic treatment before dinner.

Night

Dinner is a candlelit affair — Rajasthani, Mughlai, Continental or Chinese — after which you retire to a cabin turned down for the night, lulled by the rails toward tomorrow's city. It is, quite simply, a week of waking up somewhere wonderful. Discover life on board.
